What To Do Before Launching Your Blog

Launching your blog

You’ve chosen your niche and a domain name, and you’ve downloaded WordPress (if you still haven’t done this, check out this tutorial). You’ve also customised your blog. So now it’s time to share your blog with the world! Well, not just yet. There are a couple of things you should do before launching your blog.

Part 1 – Do Your Research

Step 1

Choose your audience. Think of that one person you imagine writing to and make up a biography for her:

  • How old is she?
  • What does she do?
  • Where does she live?
  • What does she like to talk about?
  • What problems is she facing?

This will help you have a clear view of your ideal reader, who you aim for your audience to be.

Step 2

You know your audience and found your niche, so let’s take it one step further. Now you’re going to study other bloggers in your niche (these are not your competition, think of them more as your work mates, your friends even).

  • Search for bloggers using relevant keywords
  • Make a list of 10 blogs in your niche
  • Follow them on social media and subscribe to their newsletter
  • Comment on their blog regularly (make sure that your comment is insightful)
  • Share their content on social media
  • Write a guest post for them
  • Interview them for your blog
  • Purchase their products

And don’t forget to get familiar with their content. This is a good opportunity to learn from bloggers who have been doing what they do for a while.

Step 3

Just a little bit more research and you will be ready to start writing your awesome content. You want to write something people want to read, right? But how do you know what is trending/popular in your niche? Research of course!

Buzzsumo is a tool that can help you with this! This will help you analyse which topics are doing really well in your niche. You can even enter the URL of the bloggers you’ve listed in the previous step.

Step 4

Make a list of 5 post ideas for each category in your menu. Take your time coming up with awesome and unique ideas. Do not rush this step.

Part 2 – Coming Soon

This is a great way to start getting subscribers even before your blog goes live. And chances are, if someone stumbles upon your blog with a great ‘coming soon’ page, they will return. Here are the things you should include in your ‘coming soon’ page:

  • An explanation of your blog – This is the perfect opportunity to explain to people what your blog is about, and what they can expect to find once it’s launched.
  • Subscription – The goal here is to get people to want more. By putting a subscription box to your ‘coming soon’ page, you can start growing your subscribers from day one.
  • Offer a freebie – Cos who doesn’t love a freebie? You can offer free printables, fonts, stock photos, etc to encourage people to subscribe to your blog.
  • Social media – Social media is a great marketing tool, so adding icons in your ‘coming soon’ page is a great way for people to also follow you on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Most of all, create curiosity. Make sure your ‘coming soon’ page is something your ideal reader will be intrigued by. And of course, don’t forget to put your logo and maybe even your colour schemes in this page.

Part 3 – Writing Content

Step 1

The first thing you should write is your ‘About Me’ page. This will probably be your most visited page, so it needs to be stellar. Melyssa Griffin explains in detail how to do this.

Step 2

Before you actually launch your blog, you’re going to want to write a couple of posts (at least four). Make sure these are very well written. You do not just want to write content just to fill up your blog for launch day. You want to impress your readers with your content. Take your time with this step.

These should include:

  • A great title
  • An introduction that pulls your reader in. By reading your introduction your reader should know exactly what your post is about
  • A detailed body (do not go out of subject)
  • A conclusion that wraps up or summarises your post
  • Don’t forget to include images
  • Lists work very well in posts too

Step 3

Don’t forget to include a Call To Action (CTA) at the end of each post. This can include a subscription box, a freebie opt in and social media sharing buttons.

Part 4 – Social Media Buzz

If you followed my previous tutorial then you’ve already set up your social media pages. Now it’s time to promote your blog on social media!

Twitter

  • Follow bloggers in your niche (and follow a couple of their followers) – They will probably follow you back
  • Retweet or like tweets that go well with your niche
  • Tweet updates about your blog launch
  • Share some teasers

Facebook

  • Invite your friends to like your page
  • Share content from bloggers in your niche
  • Share some teasers
  • Join groups for bloggers

Instagram

  • Follow other bloggers in your niche (and a couple of their followers)
  • Like and comment on their photos
  • Share some teasers

Pinterest

  • Follow other bloggers in your niche (and a couple of their followers)
  • Pin content to different boards (make sure they go well with your niche)

Most importantly, take your time with setting up your blog properly before launching it. I know you’re excited to share your blog with the world, but you’ll be glad you did it properly from the very start.

And once you do have everything set up, don’t be afraid to press that launch button and promote the heck out of it! You did all that work, but without actually promoting your blog, it might mean that no one will read your content. And you definitely don’t want that!

I really hope these tutorials have made the process of starting your own blog easier ❤ Well done & good luck!

That’s one of the most important things for me! Whenever I’m writing a post, I always keep in mind my ideal reader so I make sure I’m writing something that would interest her, something that would solve a problem she might be having =)
